State of the Library Report

Monica and I were at the last meeting of the Altadena Town Council when Mark Mariscal and Barbara Pearson presented the 2006-2007 Annual Report on the Altadena Library. They had much to be proud of.

The appointments of Roberta Lauderdale, Cassandra Stearns, and Robert Housley bring strong professionals into critical leadership positions. A study was completed that showed what must be done to bring our Library into compliance with requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act and a five-year remediation plan was adopted and begun. Generous contributions from the Friends of the Altadena Library facilitated a number of modest enhancements of the spaces and enabled the addition of two Americorps volunteers. Four more computer stations were added to the Adult Computer Center. Another means of serving the public was introduced by having our Library designated a Passport Application Acceptance Facility. While I am typing this on Saturday morning, the rain is pouring down reminding me that steps are being taken to repair the Library's leaking roof.

These are just some highlights. You can get a copy of the report at the Library. Come in and pick one up. You'll be impressed. I know that Monica and I were.

We have a Library with welcoming facilities, extensive resources, and an outstanding staff. Together they serve our community well. Also, there is a world of information out there and Altadena Library can help you access it. I urge you to get better acquainted with our Library. Give its people an opportunity to serve you!

I heard that the library has chosen a co. named Letner to do the new roof. There was a 9/14 deadline for submitting bids (per the teeny item in the want-ad section of the Pas. Wkly.)

I believe they have not had a board mtg. during that time & the next one is Monday coming. I am curious if the ex. dir. can make these decisions without the bd. Do you know? Also the criteria for selection is waay important imho - for instance, do they/she choose just on low price?

I'm hoping you can shed some light on this.

Thanks.

Roberta

Dear Roberta,

The four Board members present at the 9-24-2007 meeting approved the staff recommendation to contract with Letner Roofing for the Library's roof repairs.

The list of clients Letner Roofing has includes the Arcadia Library and the Fairchild Library at Caltech. Visit their Web site for a complete list. http://www.letner.com/showcase.html

Regards,
Tom Hubbard
